My puppy becomes housetrained

At the time of adoption (8-9 weeks) puppies are seldom clean. At that age, the puppy does not control his sphincters completely and might dirty the house. However, if he has a basket or a private place to rest, the puppy avoids relieving himself in that place which he considers to be his nest. He will go elsewhere to relieve himself, in some other spot in the home, which will then have to be cleaned and deodorized to avoid that the puppy identifies this as « the place to go ». Avoid using javel or ammonia which reinforces the smell of urine for the puppy.

The learning process can be encouraged by respecting some rules mentioned below.

Take your pup out:

  • after every catch of food or drink
  • each time he wakes up
  • as often as possible at first, you will later be able to diminish progressively the number of outings.
  • These are instants when the puppy spontaneously needs to go.

Do not use newsprint in the home to housetrain your dog.

In fact, it will only add another learning stage and makes it therefore more difficult. As soon as your pup is correctly vaccinated, you can take it out on the street or the garden.

Take your puppy out as soon as he begins sniffing the ground...

Take your pup out as soon as he begins sniffing the ground insistently and looking to be searching for something. This behavior means that he needs to go and that he is choosing a place.

Do not pick up the excrements of your puppy in front of him.

It would mean for him that you take interest in what he made and could encourage it to begin again.

Reward your puppy when he goes outside.

If unfortunately, he makes an accident inside, punish him only if you catch him in the act. Your pup will not understand the punishment if it arrives later, he will not make the link between both events.
